Ice Hotels
Buildings of snow and ice stand only while the cold holds. Crews cut blocks, raise walls over timber forms and carve the interiors, and when the thaw arrives the whole structure returns to water and the ground is bare. Nothing is stored: each winter the plan is drawn again and the work starts from the beginning.
Lainio Snow Village
Lainiotie, Ylläsjärvi, Finland
Crews at Lainio pack snow over timber forms each winter, then hollow out the vaults once the shell has set hard. Ice for the walls and the furniture is cut from water nearby. The halls stand on the operator's own ground beside the Lainio road, with the Ylläs fells behind them and forest on the other sides.
Warmth undoes the whole shell in spring, and nothing is carried over from one year to the next; the plan changes with the crew that carves it. Timber cabins and a restaurant on the same ground stay in use through the warmer months, so the address is not shut when the snow has gone.
Ask the operator directly about the winter season, about which halls are open on a given night, and about how the ground is reached in poor weather. Conditions decide much of it, and the answers change from week to week.

Iglu-Dorf Zermatt
Rotenboden shelf, above Zermatt, Switzerland
Iglu-Dorf builds domes of packed snow on a high shelf above Zermatt, on the Gornergrat side of the valley. Blocks are cut and stacked by hand, and the sleeping places are lined with sheepskin and insulated equipment described by the operator. The village sits well above the town, in the open, with the Matterhorn on the skyline.
The domes are undone by the thaw rather than by the crew, and the shelf is built up from new snow the following winter. The operator keeps several such villages in the Alps, so this address belongs to a wider seasonal programme rather than to a standing building on the mountain.
The ascent is by mountain railway and then on foot across snow, and the operator sets out what to bring and when to arrive. Confirm the winter season, the meeting arrangements and the state of the ground before travelling up.

Snowman World Igloo Hotel
Santa Claus Village, Rovaniemi, Finland
Snowman World raises its ice rooms inside the grounds it keeps at Santa Claus Village, on the northern edge of Rovaniemi. Walls, beds and seating are cut from ice and packed snow, and the sleeping berths are dressed with insulated bags rather than ordinary bedding. The structure stands beside the operator's own restaurant and ice bar.
Nothing of the ice building survives the thaw; it is cut and raised again from the ground up when the cold returns. The same site keeps heated rooms and a restaurant working outside the coldest months, so the address has a life that continues after the ice has gone.
Season length, which rooms inside the ice building are in use, and the walk in from the parking ground are all worth confirming with the operator, since the northern winter does not begin on a fixed date and the published opening moves with it.

Hotel of Ice at Bâlea Lac
Bâlea Lac, Făgăraș Mountains, Romania
The ice building at Bâlea Lac is cut from blocks taken out of the lake it stands beside, high in the Făgăraș range. Walls and sleeping platforms are raised by a local crew once the water has frozen hard enough to work, and a small ice chapel is built on the same shelf. The ground lies above the tree line.
By late spring the blocks return to the lake and the shelf is bare again, so the plan is drawn afresh every winter and nothing is kept. A timber chalet on the same shelf works through the year and takes guests when the ice building is not standing.
Access depends on the weather, and the road over the pass is shut in the cold months; the operator explains the arrangements in force at the time. Confirm the season, the state of the mountain and the way in to the lake before setting out.

This is an independent record with no tie to any operator named on it. Details come from published sources and can change without notice. The snow and ice buildings work only in the cold months and are raised again from nothing every year. Nothing here is sold or reserved; confirm everything with the house itself.
